HOW TO USE IT

• Type a search term, such as 'tax dodge,' into the search box at the top. Don't use quotes. As you type, watch the typeahead panel that appear with potential matches. To run your search, press Return or click the ">" button at the right.
• In each line of your search results, the long number at the start, such as '3152451,' is a unique AOL member identifier. Click that number to see all AOL search records for that user.
• Click any search term in the results, such as 'camaro,' to see all AOL search records that include the term.
• To remove uninteresting results such as 'cat,' Ctrl-Alt-click on the word in your results. This runs the same search with 'NOT cat' added. For those of us with Macs, that's Alt-Cmd-click.
• Help
  • The clock icon in the search box will open a timerange control
  • Show Events by Time plots your search results
  • Cheat Sheet shows the full search syntax for the search box
  • Splunk Assistant in the lower right pops shows contextual help
  • Help pops up full Splunk documentation
• To create a full URL that goes straight to your favorite search results, click the Splunks -> Permalink menu option above the search box

1. Download free splunk server from http://www.splunk.com
2. Install splunk
   
   IMPORTANT! be sure to set readonly field:
   
   <$SPLUNK_HOME>/etc/myinstall/search.xml <isReadonly>true</isReadonly>
3. Download the aol data from: http://www.gregsadetsky.com/aol-data/
4. Load the data into the splunk server - copy the downloaded archive file into the splunk server at <$SPLUNK_HOME>/var/spool/splunk
5. You're done! Email splunkd@gmail.com to get it added to the list..
